PALOS VERDES ESTATES, CA — This is the reason you’ve hung onto your parachute pants, neon headbands and those old-school roller skates. Dig ’em out: It’s their time to shine!

The South Coast Botanic Garden, an 87-acre oasis in Palos Verdes Estates, is transforming its lush property into a music-driven, glittering disco paradise as DiscOasis kicks off July 16.

A one-of-a-kind, “fantastical explosion of good times, art, light, scents, tastes, disco, dancing, and — yes, roller skating!” is on the locale’s evening agenda through Labor Day weekend, according to organizers, Nile Rodgers, Grammy Award-winning, musical mastermind behind such hits as “We Are Family” and Chic’s “La Freak,” and entertainment agency Constellation Immersive.

“The DiscOasis is a dream come true for me,” Rodgers said. “People know and love to dance to my songs. What they may not know is that I’ve been a skater all my life, and I love to roller disco!”

Patrons can book DiscOasis tickets here for the event, that is family-friendly for ages 3 and up, with time slots from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. through Monday. Sept. 6.

What to expect? How about …

  • Roller Disco: Guests can skate and dance along with professional roller skaters and fab-clad performers throughout the garden and in the radiant Roller Disco.
  • Bops, blooms and disco balls: “Imagine planting a garden by disco seeds, which burst into dancing flowers.”
  • Grow, Glow, and Groove Dance Flora: Revel in the oversized “bloom” box dance floor, as lighting pulses to the rhythm.

DiscOasis nights will include DJs, along with eats and drinks, with food trucks reminiscent of iconic, roller-rink snack bars, plus charcuterie boards in designated picnic areas, and mocktails and cocktails.

Attendees can bring their own skates, or use skates provided for free (included with cost of admission ticket) during guests’ designated skate time. Roller skates will start at junior size 10 through adult size 13, with roller blades from junior size 13 through adult size 12.

A limited number of helmets also will be available. But do note: Wrist, knee and elbow pads will not be offered. Socks are required for skate rentals, but will be offered for purchase for those in need.

Wheelchair access will be allowed, provided an adult companion pushes the wheelchair in their own shoes and stays within 10 feet of the perimeter boarding, management said.

The DiscOasis has designated as its charity partner the “We Are Family Foundation,” a not-for-profit co-founded by Rodgers and dedicated to the “vision of a global family” with programs promoting cultural diversity, talents and ideas of young people, organizers said. Patrons can support the foundation by making donations directly to @WeAreFamilyFdtn or via donations with ticket purchase.

Three NFT VIP Night collectible tickets will be released and auctioned off in mid-July. Winning bidders will attend the VIP opening night and receive a unique autographed The DiscOasis gift.

Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame and Songwriters Hall Of Fame inductee Rodgers is playing “DiscOasis Groovemaster” as he has curated the theatrical-fantasy soundscape.

“I can remember the first time I ever walked into a disco and saw people from every walk of life put their troubles, prejudices and differences aside in the name of love and dance. It was the perfect place, and we look to create that same spirit at The DiscOasis,” said Rodgers, with such hits to his credit as “I Want Your Love,” “Dance, Dance, Dance Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah” and “Everybody Dance.”
